Farm TD a different take on farming and tower defense games!

Farm TD

Are you looking for a chill game or a more intense game? Well, this can kind of be both, depending on what difficulty you play on. Farm TD is a new tower defense game that is coming out in March of 2025. The game was published and developed by R.J. Brontsema, who also did The Little Pixel That Could, which will come out later this year, and The Fanciful Chronicle, which came out in June of 2024. You can play the demo of the game right now!

Concept

Well, the gist behind the game is that you are to defend your farm from the threat of bugs. You can do that by using your farm animals in their pasture to prevent the bugs from getting to the farm. There are various routes you can choose from, as well as a range of animals that all do different things. Not only do you get coins from defeating bugs, but you can actually plant things in your farms to get coins after taking care of them. They then will be harvestable in a certain amount of rounds. You do have to watch out from hungry wildlife, as they will come and eat your hard earned money.
There are different ways to improve your chances of survival. You have to know first that if a bug reaches the end, it corrupts one random farm plot. It can be one in use or one you have nothing planted. Boss monsters will take more than one crop spot, and after you lose a certain number of hearts, it's game over. So not only do you want to protect your crops but your hearts too. You only start with 20 of them.
There is a barn where you can upgrade each animal. Some you can upgrade in attack speed, and some you can increase their range. It's a progressive upgrade, so think the first costs 100 while the next rank costs 200.
Not only each animal but also the watch towers can be upgraded. The towers increase their range to make cloaked bugs visible to attack, while upgrading the animals can increase all sorts of different things depending on the animal. the area of attack, the attack power, the range, and more.

Animals

Unfortunately, I don't have the cow or the goat unlocked yet. The plus side is that when you do the random one, it does have a chance to be an animal you don't have unlocked.

Crops

Now, each crop takes different amounts of water and rounds to grow.

Lettuce - 6 waves 2 water cost 55 coins gives 80 coins and 6 favor
Radish - 2 waves 2 water cost 65 coins gives 80 coins and 2 favor
Wheat - 12 waves 2 water cost 80 coins gives 160 coins and 7 favor
Corn -  4 waves 2 water cost 90 coins gives 120 coins and 4 favor
Potatoes - 6 waves 2 water, cost 420 gives 800 coins
Sunflower - cost 90, not unlocked
Beets - cost 110, not unlocked
Cucumbers - cost 200, not unlocked yet
Onions - costs 19,0 not unlocked yet
Carrots - cost 220, not unlocked
Gords or garlic? - cost 250, not unlocked
Tomatoes - cost 560, not unlocked
Watermelon - cost 600, not unlocked
Pumpkins - cost 750, not unlocked

Favor

Growing crops isn't the only way to earn favor. Now, favor can be used for a few things; you can get sprinklers to auto water a section of crops. Each crop area has 9 crops, and there are 6 total sections. First, sprinkler cost 25, then goes up to 50, 100 and kind of progresses up the further you go. You can get scarecrows, which are useful in the higher difficulty as they can help keep away those pesky goats that want to eat your crops. You can also get caravans which will go about and go to a different town and bring back 100 gold. (more if you have a permanent upgrade) You can also get a balloon bomber that randomly drops bombs on the pasture to help fight the bugs. It really is random and sometimes hits nothing at all. Now, I mentioned crops not being the only thing that gets favor, so what else is there? bounties, you can add bosses to the wave, defeat it, and get favor. There is a limit to how many times you can do each, and they also have a cooldown timer.

Farm points

Now, when you make it through the waves or are defeated in the end, your score is tallied, and you get farm points. With those on the main menu, you can unlock those other animals, unlock new crops, or

Thoughts

There aren't many achievements, and as I stopped streaming, I needed a different kind of gaming goal, and that has been my focus to get achievements, so I'm focused on those puppies. That being said, I also want to mention I did get the key from the devs through a program called Keymailer. I find you can chill and play at a nice pace on the normal and easy levels. On the harder levels, the waves are on a timer, and you don't get to choose when you move forward.
The animals all, for some reason, have HUGE bug eyes if you zoom in. I found this hilarious. But at the same time, it was hard to figure out which animal was which because the eyes were so huge.
I do wish there were more pop-ups, like if I hovered over a bug, it would tell me stuff about it. I also didn't mention before, but you can also bet on animal races to earn more money, or of course lose it. I suck at those so I tried once lost money and never touched it again.
I, of course, enjoy the game and plan on getting all the achievements. I don't like how it's full screen, and when you go to go to another screen, the screen keeps panning.

There are no user reviews on Steam yet, but there is one comment in the community tab that said, "coudlve been cool but the graphics/art is so bad" by Tbjbu2

Since the game isn't out yet, I wonder if there will be any updates. The last update was September 21st, so that also keeps you wondering when it will be released and if there will be any additions to the game.

You mentioned that there are different paths? Like a layout to the pasture and how the bugs move?

This isn't survival but, it looks like a chill game to play. How much replay value does it really have though?

Yes! The tutorial has it's own path, while there are 6 paths to choose from when you play any of the other modes.

If you're an achivement hunter, the achivement that takes the longest would be "Late State Capitalism" which is having 1000 farm credits at once. So it might take a while to get to that. I have 6 hours play time so far and only have 6/10 achivements. That's longer gameplay that some AAA games.
