Robin Hood - Sherwood Builders - Casual Game Review

Robin Hood - Sherwood Builders

Sherwood Builders is an action-adventure community builder, survival all rolled into one.

It was developed by MeanAstronauts and published by PlayWay S.A.

Background

You are in the classic story of Robin Hood, while of course, you are Robin Hood. It's your job to liberate the people. You can do this by increasing your repetition in each area of the map. There are 4 different areas you need to turn over to your favor. You can do this by raiding caravans, attacking camps, and doing quests.

Venturing out you have to collect resources for your main town. Wood, stone, hide, and other items. Building up new buildings and houses. Each building gives you a station to craft new things as well as other things. So it's something to focus on. Being able to craft new armor, medicines, and weapons will be helpful in your adventures.

There are a lot of puzzle-type areas on the map. I had to direct lights to open a gate and mess with symbols in order to open a door. It is a very cute extra concept to a game. I've always felt more games need puzzles.

This is again a survival game, so you need to keep up your hunger and thirst meters. You can do this by cooking food and filling empty bottles with water from wells.

Improving

I am a huge fan of open-skill tree concepts. Where you don't need to have a direct line to a skill but can navigate and build a character to match your playstyle. So as you level you get more points that can be applied to this tree however you want.

The buildings you can build in town also upgrade your character's abilities. So not only is there a skill tree, but also another way to improve yourself. Think of it this way the skill tree is more for passives, while the buildings are for special attacks and abllitles.

Once the buildings are up, you can also allocate workers to them, for instance, hunters, and fishers. Building more houses gets you more workers. But it takes resources and money to build most things. Upgrading the buildings also lets you make better things in each. The production is also increased by the number of workers.

Hunter vision

able to see life forms around you in a greyed-out version of the world. life forms show up as yellow if they are friendly and red if they are bad. Harvestable resources will pop up a teal color. So it's easier to find herbs and other items out in the wild. Boxes also pop up yellow., and dropped items will have a gold min beacon shimmer over them. This only lasts for so long.

Slow motion

This is nice when birds, deer, or opponents are running around to slow down time to be able to aim your bow better or maneuver in battle. This only lasts for so long.

Map

On the map, there are cross road markers, that are actually used as travel points. Once you interact with them you will be able to travel from point to point. The further a point is from you it might even cost you a portion of your thirst and hunger. the most basic taking 1-2% away from you while who knows how much it would be to go across the whole map. (I haven't gotten there yet)

The map will also show locations where there is wildlife, pretty much deer.

Once you've explored the map you will also be able to tell where enemies camps are, if you've already defeated them, if enemies have returned, or if you haven't been there yet.

There are bed locations you can rest at and also interact with your global chest. Which makes it nice to have a stash everywhere.

You'll be able to see mining points. Each tells you what kind of resources you'll find there as well.

Various locations in towns will be seen on the map like the notice board, well, and other locations.

New quests will be marked by a person icon with an exclamation point. Kill quests will be marked by a cross sign.

You can also see other things like possible bridges, ruined locations, and more.

Thoughts

I loved this game. It was a little hard as some areas either my skills or my armor wasn't up to par. I went with the approach of trying to pick a guy off in the camp as I went. While everyone knows that I suck at sneaking more than anything.

Not being able to see my hot bar kind of sucked. You can drag things into your numbers like most games but you have to remember what number you put what thing or you could start eating up food instead of switching to a weapon. You can also use tab instead to open up a wheel but I've never liked the wheel concept in any game.

I also had a random caravan event happen in the middle of me trying to raid a camp, to which then I had extra enemies to defeat.

Picking up things was a little weird, some times you could just hold E down and it would pick up everything around you, while other times you would have to directly point to something to be able to pick it up.

This is a game that I look forward to finishing playing. I want to be the very best Robin Hood, even though I'm not sure if I can beat Cary Elews in that... (That just so happens to be my favorite movie too XD)
