Chaos Magic - Casual gaming review

Chaos Magic

What is chaos magic? Well, I have played Magic the Gathering for years, and have enjoyed all kinds of side quests provided by the game like Arch Enemy, the board games with the tiles, and the many formats there are. We mainly play EDH anymore (Commander) So I decided to do a new spin on playing it.

Basic

You have your normal pod of players and play the game almost normally. The first round is normal but at the start of the second round things are a little different.

Before you start your turn so before upkeep. You roll a 20-sided die.

Evens, you get the positive bowl.

Odds, you get the negative bowl.

With the exception of 5, 10, 15, 20. If any of those are rolled, you don't draw a slip, instead, you put the used slips back into the bowls they came from.

Now to the bowls, what's with bowls and slips? Well, each bowl has a range of good things in the positive bowl, or bad things if it's the negative bowl. There is an exception for neutral items that both bowls have a copy in each bowl. We also had 2 of each of the positive/negative in their respective bowls.

Here are the things we had in each bowl.

Positive Bowl

  • In this round, you can attack each player with the same creature
  • Each creature you have gets a +1/+1 counter
  • Gain 10 hp
  • Draw a card
  • Gain a 2/2 flying the same color and type as your commander
  • Untap at the end of your turn
  • Draw two cards
  • Destroy one creature on board
  • Destroy one artifact on board
  • Everyone Has To Say Something Positive About You

Negative bowl

  • Discard 1 card at random
  • Exile your discard
  • Lose 10 hp
  • Sacrifice one creature
  • Lose 3 life and give 3 life to a chosen player
  • Skip your draw step
  • Don’t untap this turn
  • Until your next turn balance a book on your head
  • All players except you return to starting health (unless they surpassed starting health)
  • Sacrifice one artifact

Neutral

  • [ Protect ]: You Lose Your Turn, But You Are Unable To Take Damage. (If A Player Tries To Attack You, You Heal Instead)
  • [ Welp… ]: All Creatures On The Battle Field Have Heart Attacks And Die.
  • [ Vital Signs ]: All Players Gain 5 Health
  • [ Earthquake ]: Give A Creature On Your Battlefield to The Player To Your Right.
  • [ Mouthy ]: Everyone Has To Wear “Mouth Spacers” Until Your Next Turn.
  • [ Kitten? ]: You Have To Say Meow Or Nyan At The End Of Each Sentence Until Your Next Turn
  • [ Universal Rage ]: Create a +0/+2 emblem that buffs all creatures on board. (Son meant to do +2/+0)
  • [ Mandatory Stretching ]: Everyone Has To Stand Until Your Next Turn

Thoughts

This was hilarious fun and may have turned the tables on the balance of our decks. To start with we don't pick our decks, we have a list of 19 decks and we roll a 20-sided with the 20 being reroll to pick what deck we are playing. So I played a deck I never had, and so was my daughter, my son somehow got his own deck, and well technically all the decks are hubs so he got one he built on his own anyway.

Some of the slips we had never seen, two of us had to balance books on our heads. Our creatures all had heart attacks A LOT. A game that should have taken maybe 10 turns at most maybe an hour of play. Took 3 and a half hours.

This was super fun and we are trying to think of more fun things to add to the bowls for next time.
Now every time someone uses a board wipe I'm going to have the urge to loudly proclaim WELP!!!!
