Disney Dreamlight Valley - Casual Game Review

Disney Dreamlight Valley

Disney Dreamlight Valley is a life-sim RPG with a wide range of things to do like quests, cooking, and more. Developed by Gameloft Montreal and published by Gameloft.  This game is in its early access stages and plans to be released as a free game. But you can get the "founders pack" now, each having a different tier and included items. The game is available on the Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and on pc.

You, the main character, find yourself in this unknown world, everyone is affected by the darkness that makes them forget not only about themselves but about others as well. As you progress you unlock not only some of their memories, but you might remember some of yours as well.

There are a few tools at your disposal that are embedded with magic, like a watering pal, fishing rod, shovel, pickaxe, and a cute camera to take selfies with all the characters. Speaking of characters, with has a wide range of them from both Pixar and Disney. The game really has an animal crossing feel to it as you can pick flowers and sticks off the ground to use for crafting, but also you collect and try to befriend the characters. When you do unlock characters, you’ll have to build them their house which costs coins.

For each character, you can assign a task, and this will help you with that task. For instance, if you ask Buzz to help you with gardening when you pick plants there is a chance you can get more of that item. Each character can gain experience to level up, all tasks will give some, but their assigned task will give them more. When leveling a character, it can give you items like furniture, clothing, motifs, and quests to do. The max level for each character is 10. Some characters are unlocked from quests from other characters while some are unlocked by opening different realms located in the castle.

Some quests won't start until you unlock other characters or get them up to a certain level. The tasks that you can assign a character are gardening, mining, shoveling, fishing, or foraging. You can change these later if you want with the right kind of crafting item. Some quests start from memories, that can be found by doing certain tasks. Some will only be done by mining, while others will only be done by fishing.

As you progress through the various quests and stories you can level your tool's strengths so break objects you couldn’t before, in the various biomes.

There are 8 different biomes, the plaza, peaceful meadows, the dazzling beach, the forest of valor, frosted heights, the sunlit plateau, the glade of trust, and the forgotten land. Each has its own followers, animals, ores, gems, and fish that spawn. When unlocking a new area, you can also have more access to fruits that grow in the form of trees or bushes.

There are a few sets of currency, and there is dreamlight, which you will use to unlock biomes, and realms, and use for some crafting items. You get that by completing various missions, like cumulative fishing so many times in a certain biome, or some daily duties that can be as simple as changing your outfit. Coins you get by task randomly spawning them, selling things to Goofy's shops, and leveling characters. Doing duties can give you tickets that you can exchange for event items, while moonstones can be bought with real money to buy shop items or unlock premium to get more event items.

On your map, you can see where each character is and teleport to wells that are placed around the map. Now these wells must be unlocked with coins. Other things to do with coins is upgrade shops, buildings, and your house.

You can add rooms and floors to your house and decorate each room however you want with the various furniture items you can craft, buy, and unlock. When you enter your house, you can also restore your energy. Energy can also be restored by eating. There is a wide variety of foods you can make.

This game was fun to play alongside characters that I grew up watching and having them hang out with me while doing various tasks. It also made it easy to make a character follow me while doing their quests so I could just talk to them when I was done rather than find them on the map. The swimmers are the hardest to corner.
